Kenmore, WA – May 2025 — The Kenmore Heritage Society proudly celebrated the 2025 McMaster Awards Ceremony, an evening dedicated to honoring individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Kenmore community. The event was held at the Kenmore Aqua Club and recognized three exceptional recipients for their leadership, service, and vision.

This year’s McMaster Heritage Award was presented to David Baker, former Kenmore Mayor and long-time public servant. Baker was honored for his decades of dedication to making Kenmore a vibrant and welcoming city. His legacy includes establishing the Senior Center at Rhododendron Park, expanding green spaces, and securing over $300 million in grant funding to support the city’s growth.

Emma Choi, a senior at Inglemoor High School, received the Emerging Leader Award for her exceptional academic performance, leadership in school organizations, and dedication to volunteerism. Known for her positive spirit and mentorship, Emma represents the next generation of thoughtful and engaged community leaders.

The Making a Difference for Businesses Service Award was awarded to Jason Parker, owner of Copperworks Distilling Co. A committed advocate for local businesses and a driving force behind community events like Oktoberfest, Parker was praised for his vision, initiative, and community-first approach.

In addition to the evening’s award presentations, the Society gave special recognition to Suzanne Greathouse, Past President of the Kenmore Heritage Society, for her continued service and commitment to preserving Kenmore’s rich history.

“We created these awards to shine a light on the individuals who make Kenmore such a special place,” said Marella Alejandrino, President of the Kenmore Heritage Society. “It’s about more than honoring achievements—it’s about celebrating heart, leadership, and the many ways our neighbors quietly shape our shared future.”

The event concluded with prize drawings from local businesses and a warm thanks to attendees, leaving the community inspired and deeply connected through shared appreciation.

De La Soil, a true farm-to-table kitchen, is slated to open on Monday, May 12, 2025, inside Copperworks Kenmore, which is owned and operated by Copperworks Distilling Co.

Located along the Burke Gilman Trail and just one block north of Lake Washington, Copperworks Kenmore comprises a family-friendly 5,000-square-foot establishment that offers both indoor and outdoor seating and hosts a variety of community events, including seasonal suppers, concerts, artisan markets, and festive activities like photos with Santa.

Owned and operated by Chefs Cody & Andrea Westerfield, De La Soil will draw the vast majority of its produce from the nearby Tuk Muk Farm in Woodinville, WA—a mere 20-minute bike ride away.

Chef Cody has previously led the kitchens of renowned Seattle establishments like Lecosho, Serafina Osteria, Cicchetti, and Frank’s Oyster House. He most recently helped launch Baker’s and Bar Miriam. Chef Andrea has worked as a pastry chef at several Seattle restaurants, including Lecosho and Serafina Osteria.

The duo initially established De La Soil as a private pop-up events company in 2018.

“We are thrilled to transition from pop-ups to our own brick-and-mortar space, allowing us to deepen our bond with the community and present a menu that evolves with the seasons,” said Chef Cody Westerfield. “The idea of food uniting people drives us. With a butcher for a father and a baker for a mother, food was our bond. Though I lost them too soon, every dish I create with my wife, Andrea, tells our story. From opposite corners of the world—her Mexican heritage and my Swedish roots—we blend flavors and memories, always seeking to connect through the joy of sharing meals. Cooking is not just about food; it’s about honoring the past and writing new chapters together.”

De La Soil will exclusively offer counter service in alignment with several other local establishments combining convenience with a warm, welcoming vibe.

In this new venture, guests can enjoy De La Soil’s thoughtfully crafted dishes and Copperworks Distilling Co. spirits and cocktails, enhancing the dining experience with unique flavor profiles that celebrate the farm-to-kitchen philosophy and local craftsmanship.

Tuk Muk Farm Partnership
“As head chef of Lecosho, I was curious about how to decrease the kitchen’s carbon footprint, and I was introduced to Tuk Muk Farm Owner and Farmer Shawn Miller,” said Chef Cody. “Shawn was gracious enough to teach me how to best go about it, and we’ve partnered together every season since. Shawn is our farmer and farm liaison. This means if a product is not currently available from Tuk Muk, Shawn will utilize his network of contacts to find the sought-after ingredients, helping us and local farms in the process.”

The program is built to help businesses, and their communities thrive with a focus on economic growth. To date, Comcast RISE has awarded 14,000 small businesses with over $140 million in monetary, marketing, and technology grants.

This year, Comcast RISE will award 500 recipients in five cities with a grant package that includes business consultation services, educational resources, a monetary grant, creative production, a media schedule, and a technology makeover. Comcast RISE is part of Project UP, Comcast’s comprehensive initiative to advance digital opportunity and help build a future of unlimited possibilities.
Program Details:
500 awards total will be distributed as follows:
100 small businesses in each city

Each business will receive:
• $5,000 monetary grant
• Creative production, media, and technology makeovers
• Education resources
• Business consultation services

Application period is May 1-31, 2025, and grants will be awarded in August 2025.

Seattle sports teams are committed to maintaining purchasing practices that promote and expand contracting opportunities for diverse vendors and suppliers. To that end, the Seattle Sports Commission is hosting a Vendor Diversity Fair where locally minority-owned businesses, women-owned businesses, and other small businesses are invited to share information and the goods and services they provide and explore potential business opportunities with the teams.

There will be representatives from the Marketing, IT, Retail*, People & Culture (Human Resources), Ticket Sales, Procurement, Finance, Community Relations, Ballpark Operations, Baseball Information, and Sodexo Live! (T-Mobile Park Concessionaire) departments.

Some examples of goods & services that the Teams may be looking for: printing, signage, event décor, unique small prize/gifts, entertainment (face painters, balloon artists, musicians, etc.), lighting equipment, data management, wearables, food & drink vendors, construction contractors, office equipment & supplies, service consultant, and trophies & awards, carpet supplier & installation, professional framing, and professional services.

*Please note that branded retail & wearables for the Mariners will require direct MLB approval and licensing and cannot be facilitated by the Mariners in-house.

How it will work:

• Team representatives will be seated at tables around the room, with their names and departments (i.e. Marketing, Procurement, Retail, etc.) displayed – Please note that as the vendor attending the event, you will be able to walk around the room and meet with Mariners reps/departments individually! Tucked along the northern edge of Lake Washington, Kenmore is a hidden gem where nature and community life intertwine. With its lush parks, vibrant waterfront, and a charming blend of history and trendiness, this small-town invites visitors to explore beyond the typical tourist trail. Kenmore encompasses just over 6 square miles along the northernmost shore of Lake Washington. Located at the mouth of the Sammamish River, it is a quasi-commuter town, just 12 miles northeast of downtown Seattle.

Kenmore is full of surprises. Not only is it home to the oldest operating air harbor and seaplane base in Washington, but it also has a historic Catholic seminary recently transformed into a destination hotel. The town’s emerging “brew row” features a growing collection of craft breweries and distilleries collaborating to offer an outstanding food and beverage experience. With its network of parks and trails, Kenmore has become the go-to place for those seeking a unique getaway.

Known for its unique attractions, Kenmore offers something for every kind of traveler. One standout destination is the Lodge at St. Edward Park, an incredible example of history beautifully blended with modern luxury.

From 1931 until 1977, the Lodge at St. Edward Park was known as the St. Edward Seminary – an institution for developing Catholic priests. The grand seminary building was designed by a renowned Seattle architect and featured beautiful masonry work on the exterior, with exquisite details throughout. After falling into disrepair in the years after its closure, the building was renovated with love and attention to detail, bringing it back to a modern version of its original self. The newly renovated building opened to the public as The Lodge at St. Edwards Park in 2021 as a full-service destination hotel packed with history and located on the grounds of a Washington State Park.

A highlight when visiting The Lodge is making your way along the grand hallway that is bathed in natural light and showcases a rotating exhibit of art created by local Pacific Northwest artists and curated by Catalyst Fine Art. The Lodge is also home to an Artist in Residence program that features local artists who take inspiration from the Lodge’s surroundings and create and give demonstrations of their craft.

Each of the 5 floors at The Lodge have special points of interest and can be found on a self-guided tour. The “Stories of Saint Edward Historical Tour” can be found via QR code and a tour packet that you can get at the front desk. You don’t have to be a guest of The Lodge to enjoy the property, many of the amenities and facilities are made available each day for anyone in the community to use.

A grotto can be found on the property at the Lodge at St. Edwards State Park. The grotto was built in the 1940s by seminary students.

Pickleball courts at the Lodge are available for guests and neighbors in a newly renovated gymnasium.

The Lodge has cozy and luxurious accommodations in 84 guestrooms and suites. Vita Nova, the on-site spa, offers all the best in pampering experiences, and the newly earned Michelin Key restaurant Cedar + Elm serves up creative fare in the historic dining hall. On the lower level is Tonsorium Bar, a whimsical bar featuring adventurous cocktails and food along with authentic relics from the building’s past. Don’t miss the cozy library on the 3^rd floor – it has many books and games, along with snacks and drinks for visitors to enjoy. Another hidden feature at The Lodge is the spiral stairway to the bell tower, which you may hear ringing from time to time, usually to mark the exchange of wedding vows for ceremonies taking place on site.

Kenmore may be a small city, but it is rich with parks and trails that offer residents and visitors a chance to experience nature, unwind, and enjoy outdoor recreation in the heart of an urban city. Here’s a look at some of the top spots to explore:

Saint Edward State Park

One of the crown jewels of Kenmore’s outdoor spaces, Saint Edward State Park offers something for everyone. Spanning over 300 acres, this historic park sits along the northeastern shore of Lake Washington. The park is famous for its towering trees, lush greenery, and the stunning Saint Edward Seminary building that now operates as a destination hotel. Log Boom Park is also a prime location to access the Burke-Gilman Trail, a regional multi-use trail that stretches over 27-miles, connecting several towns and neighborhoods in the Seattle area. Rhododendron Park

For a quiet escape in the heart of Kenmore, Rhododendron Park offers a peaceful retreat. Its location along the Sammamish River allows access to the revitalized wetlands and salmon habitat. Pedestrian bridges with viewing decks and elevated boardwalks offer views of the wetlands and water below. Visitors can also enjoy a community plaza with a picnic shelter, kayak storage, launching facilities for hand-carried watercraft, a public restroom, and convenient parking.

Jack V. Crawford Skate Court

For the more adventurous crowd, Jack V. Crawford “Skater’s” Park is Kenmore’s hub for skateboarding and BMX biking. The park features a variety of ramps, rails, and obstacles suitable for all skill levels.
